Preparing for energy transition in infrastructure

This issue of the excellent McKinsey review explores sustainability in infrastructure, particularly as it relates to the construction, engineering, and operation of our electric grids; oil and gas and hydrogen infrastructure; and buildings. Over the past 18 months, we have seen an acceleration of societal, policy, and investor pressures on industry to shift away from fossil fuel–based energy and toward a zero-carbon economy. As an example, while few oil and gas companies at the start of 2020 had announced 2050 net-zero emissions targets, today dozens have, including several with stated targets of or before 2040.
